In 1953 my father-in-law was sent to Siberia on a one way ticket for political reasons to do forced labour, building the railway tracks for the Soviet Empire.
I, too, was sentenced to forced labour for political reasons, building the railways during my national service under Martial law in 1981. One day I was catapulted into the air by a piece of track. I will never forget the view.
