I wandered into the old wooden hall at Mary Ward House, some paintings were
hanging in the deserted room. I walked around looking at them, and someone was
at my side asking, “What do you think of it? What does it mean?” Thinking about
this I answered and we began a frank and critical discussion of the paintings
until Ryszard said, “Well, I am the painter, you want a glass of champagne?
Later you must bring all your students to the preview, too.” You never know
exactly what is going to happen with Ryszard but you know it will be fun. And
that is how he paints.
“I use the materials to show what I think,”
the materials can be discarded window frames, an empty hall, children’s voices,
it just depends on what is happening in the environment, as he says, “ I am no
prisoner to any one style.” Asked about his work he said, “I like to think of
myself as an artist, not just a painter” and this is what he is, he creates work
with a wit and spontaneity to make us think. See for yourself.
